Working of Silver
What properties does silver contain?
Silver (Ag +) has an antibacterial effect.
• It inhibits the action of bacterial enzymes.
• Destroys the DNA of bacteria.
• Disrupts proteins in the cell membrane (celldamage)
• Cause structural changes in the cell wall of bacteria.
How do silver ions work in socks?
Silver ions in socks works as a kind of broadband antibiotic. By body fluids (sweat) and heat the positively charged silver ions become active. Bacteria and
fungi have a negative charge. Positively and negatively charged particles work together like a magnet. The silver ions attract the bacteria and fungi, and combat it.
Why is silver today being used again?
Until the second world war silver was popular as antibiotic. But because the many war victims silver was too expensive to organize large-scale deployment. Scientists were looking for a faster and cheaper way to produce an anti-bacterial agent. Which where developed further into today’s current antibiotics. Once again silver is becoming more popular again to use as anti bacterial agent.
What are conventional silver socks?
Conventional silver socks are the current generation of socks with a relatively high percentage from 12 to 20% pure silver is used. Often 60% polyester. Polyester fibres have a silver layer.
Is a higher silver content in socks not better?
No. It is often thought and claimed, but the opposite appears true. A high percentage of pure silver is also too good its work so that the bacteria
naturally present in our skin to combat (attack acid PH value).
